Heading into the offseason, the Mets are mainly focusing on bolstering their pitching and possibly signing a DH, leaving the outfield position on the backburner. However, there is a serious need for an outfielder in the team.
Currently, Brandon Nimmo is the only confirmed outfielder for the Mets’ 40-man roster on Opening Day. While Starling Marte might join, his 2023 season was injury-riddled, making his contribution uncertain. Jeff McNeil could play in the corner outfield spots but lacks the power profile. Additionally, prospect Drew Gilbert is expected to begin with Triple-A but may rise quickly and impact the team.
Given the presence of Gilbert and the hope that Marte will be healthy and productive, any outfielders the Mets acquire should only receive a short-term commitment.
Should the Mets add an outfielder and Nimmo, Marte, and Gilbert all perform well, New York will have an abundance of talent. But as David Stearns mentioned, there is no harm in having too many good players.
Here are five outfielders the Mets should consider in free agency…
1. LOURDES GURRIEL JR.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. would be a strong fit for the Mets. He had an impressive season with the Diamondbacks, showing both power and defensive skills. However, his acquisition could be complicated by Marte’s presence.
2. ADAM DUVALL
Adam Duvall, despite not having the best on-base performance, displayed his power capabilities in the 2023 season. His experience and potential availability on a short-term deal make him a desirable option for the Mets.
3. JOC PEDERSON
Joc Pederson, though inconsistent, has the ability to deliver a significant offensive impact and is relatively young. However, his struggles with left-handers are a cause for concern.
4. EDDIE ROSARIO
Eddie Rosario’s solid performance in 2023 makes him an intriguing option. While not as impactful as his earlier years, he still offers a reliable set of skills.
5. TOMMY PHAM
Tommy Pham’s stint with the Mets in 2023 was impressive. Despite his controversial comments, a reunion with Pham could be beneficial given the team’s changes in the front office and dugout.
