49ers sign guard Ben Bartch as Banks, Burford deal with injuries originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The 49ers made a move to sign offensive guard Ben Bartch off the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, addressing injuries to their starting guards. Bartch, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, brings depth and experience, having started 20 of 41 games in his first four seasons.
Left guard Aaron Banks is set to miss another game due to a toe injury, while right guard Spencer Burford’s availability is uncertain for the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks because of a knee injury. To make room for Bartch, the 49ers placed safety Talanoa Hufanga on injured reserve after he sustained a torn ACL in his right knee, requiring season-ending surgery.
Bartch, who started 11 games for the Jaguars in 2021, provides vital reinforcement for the 49ers’ offensive line, particularly with the injuries to their starting guards. Since his college football days at St. John’s University, Bartch has been known for his unique journey, including a viral moment in the 2020 NFL Combine where he shared his smoothie recipe for gaining weight and transitioning from tight end to tackle.
With the recent injury challenges, the 49ers have made strategic adjustments, including the elevation of interior offensive lineman Corey Luciano from the practice squad. This proactive approach is crucial as the team navigates through a series of injuries and strives for continued success in the season.
