Source: 49ers acquire DE Chase Young in trade with Commanders
The San Francisco 49ers made a bold move just before the NFL trade deadline, signaling their intention to strengthen their defense.
In a trade with the Washington Commanders, the 49ers acquired Chase Young, the former No. 2 overall pick, according to sources. Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area confirmed the deal, with Jay Glazer being the first to report the news.

According to Jennifer Lee Chan, the 49ers traded a third-round pick to Washington in exchange for Young. However, Young must pass a physical for the deal to be officially finalized.
The third-round draft pick traded by the 49ers is a special compensatory pick received after losing Ran Carthon, who became the Tennessee Titans general manager, and DeMeco Ryans, who became the Houston Texans coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers are projected to receive compensatory third-round picks for Mike McGlinchey, Ran Carthon, and DeMeco Ryans. One of these picks will be sent to Washington in exchange for Young.
During the offseason, Washington decided not to exercise their fifth-year option on Young due to concerns about his right knee, which he injured in 2021.
In the current season, Young has recorded five sacks in seven games after missing the season opener with a neck injury. In his four seasons with Washington, he accumulated 14 sacks, 90 tackles, and 6 forced fumbles (with 3 recoveries).
As a rookie, Young made a significant impact, registering 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and even scoring a touchdown from a fumble recovery.
Notably, the 49ers’ star defensive end, Nick Bosa, will be reunited with Young, as they were teammates at Ohio State.
This trade was the Commanders’ second move before the deadline, as they had already traded defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears earlier in the day.
