2024 ZiPS Projections: Washington Nationals

The ZiPS projection system is back, unveiling its 20th straight set of prognostications. For more information, please refer to the ZiPS projections introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is randomly chosen, and the next team up is the Washington Nationals.

Batters
Let’s start with the bad news. The depth roster has several ones and only CJ Abrams surpassed a two-win projection. And the prospects for threes or fours are slim. However, the good news is that most of the roster is young and are unlikely to have a significant role when the team becomes competitive. The focus is more on minor league veterans than aging players.

CJ Abrams stands out as the most talented player on the team. James Wood doesn’t have a great projection yet, but the computer sees him with 40 career WAR remaining — the best on the Nats. It’s a similar story with Ruiz’s OPS+ and Jake Alu and Alex Call are thought to steal more playing time. Carter Kieboom’s future remains uncertain due to injuries.
Pitchers
Pitching is a concern for the Nationals, with only Hunter Harvey having a sub-4.00 FIP projected. The retired Stephen Strasburg’s projection is present out of curiosity. The bullpen is not particularly promising. Patrick Corbin’s potential comeback is slim, while MacKenzie Gore’s future looks more promising than the current ZiPS projection suggests. Víctor Arano, on the other hand, is a free agent due to shoulder problems.

And, this enigmatic prediction continues, with a ton of HTML data listed below. But what will really happen in the 2024 season yet remains to be seen.
