10 names to watch if LSU makes a change at defensive coordinator

LSU’s defense in 2023 has been a major disappointment. Expected to improve under the leadership of defensive coordinator Matt House in Brian Kelly’s second year, the unit has instead regressed significantly. The team currently ranks 95th in scoring defense and 115th in yards per play allowed, causing LSU fans to question House’s abilities and call for his removal.

While House bears some responsibility, it’s important to note that LSU has faced challenges due to the loss of key defensive players, including five defensive backs and several members of the front seven. This has forced the team to rely on inexperienced true freshmen in key positions. Nonetheless, considering the talent on the roster, the defense’s performance has been consistently underwhelming and at times, downright incompetent.

Although it’s uncertain whether LSU will make a change at defensive coordinator, several potential replacements have been identified. One strong candidate is Jesse Minter, the current defensive coordinator at Michigan. Minter has a strong track record of success, having led Michigan to back-to-back playoff appearances. Additionally, he has previous experience working under Brian Kelly at Cincinnati and has proven his ability to build strong defenses in the south.

Travis Williams, the current defensive coordinator at Arkansas, is another viable option. Williams has a deep understanding of SEC and southern football, having played for Auburn and coached under Gus Malzahn. He is known for his aggressive play-calling and has achieved success in both coaching and recruiting.

Another promising candidate is former LSU linebackers coach DJ Baker, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Missouri. Under Baker’s leadership, Missouri’s defense has seen significant improvement, ranking in the top 60 in the past two seasons and currently sitting at 28th in the latest SP+ rankings. Baker’s familiarity with LSU, combined with his success at Missouri, makes him a strong contender.

Chris Hampton, the current defensive coordinator at Oregon, is a Louisiana native with extensive coaching experience in the state. He has excelled at every level, including leading Tulane to an AAC title and Cotton Bowl victory. Hampton’s expertise in coaching defensive backs is particularly valuable considering LSU’s defensive struggles in that area.

Tony Gibson, the current defensive coordinator at NC State, has consistently produced strong defenses over the past three years. Despite not always having top-level talent, Gibson has achieved impressive results and has experience coaching at several Power Five programs. His proven success makes him a sought-after candidate.

D’Anton Lynn, the current defensive coordinator at UCLA, has gained attention for his exceptional work this season. Under Lynn’s leadership, UCLA’s defense has ranked in the top 20 in points allowed and SP+. Though primarily focused on the NFL, Lynn’s success at UCLA and his NFL coaching experience make him an attractive candidate for LSU.

Lance Guidry, the current defensive coordinator at Miami, has a strong Louisiana connection, having been born and raised in the state. Guidry’s coaching career has included successful stints at both the high school and college levels, and his current Miami defense ranks 19th in SP+. His familiarity with the state and proven results make him a compelling option.

Jim Leonhard, currently an analyst at Illinois, is a highly respected defensive mind known for coordinating elite defenses at Wisconsin. Though he missed out on the Wisconsin head coaching job, he remains a desirable candidate with NFL coaching experience and a strong track record.

Ron English, the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Louisville, has led a highly successful defense this season. Louisville ranks 17th in points per game and 23rd in yards per play, excelling in crucial situations such as red zone, third down, and fourth down defense. English’s experience in the SEC and his ability to build top-notch units make him a steady option for LSU.

Lastly, Joe Rossi, the current defensive coordinator at Minnesota, has overseen a consistently strong defense since taking over the job in 2018. The unit has consistently ranked in the top tiers of scoring defense, with a fourth-place ranking in 2020. Despite a slight decline this year, Rossi’s track record and the Gophers’ 36th ranking in SP+ make him a contender.

While some of these candidates may be long shots, they are all worth considering due to their expertise, experience, and potential to bring about the necessary improvements to LSU’s defense.
